How to get here…

Driving:

In Canada, take Hwy 1 along the coast of New Brunswick to Rte. 176 (exit 60) then down to Blacks Harbour. Exit 60 is about 35 minutes east of Saint Stephens NB / Calais ME or about 45 minutes west of Saint John NB.

People from the USA will generally travel up I-95 to Bangor in Maine, then east on Rte. 9 to Calais. Cross the border (you will need your passport or similar acceptable id) and go east on Hwy 1 about 35 minutes to the Blacks Harbour exit 60. The drive is 10 km or 6 miles on Rte. 176 to the ferry wharf at the very end of the road.

Coastal Transport:

The ferry crossing takes approximately 1.5 hours and offers comfortable lounges, outdoor viewing decks, and a cafeteria where you can enjoy a light snack or a full meal.

You may reserve a space via the ferry operator’s website, Coastal Transport or by calling 506-662-3724. Their website has the ferry schedule, rates and information. If you do not have a reservation, you may still get on the ferry but in the summer the ferries can be busy!

NB Through the summer months it’s not unusal to see porpoises skimming alongside the ferry and even the occasional whale sighting, so have your camera ready.

For those with their own vessel:

A number of commercial wharves (North Head, Ingalls Head, White Head and Seal Cove) are also available for private vessels. Each has enough water at low water for a vessel to tie up to the wharf and private moorings are available at some of these. Wharf usage rates are available by contacting the Grand Manan Port Authority (506 662-8481).

And those with a small plane:

The island also has a 1000m air strip for small planes. A private charter service also operates from the island. No regular flights are schedule but flights can be tailored to your traveling plans by contacting them.
